Nestled in the heart of Englishtown at Marlboro Plaza, The Pickled Herring is a standout destination for lovers of authentic kosher deli cuisine. Specializing in rich, traditional flavors, this restaurant masterfully brings together classic Jewish comfort foods with a modern touch, making every visit an indulgent culinary journey.

The menu is a treasure trove for enthusiasts of hearty, flavorful dishes. Imagine sinking your teeth into an overstuffed Pastrami Corned Beef Sandwich or savoring the satisfying layers of their Classic Reuben Sandwich, each bite bursting with smoky, tangy, and savory notes. The Knish, a flaky, golden delight filled with potato or other traditional fillings, offers a perfect snack or accompaniment. Don’t miss out on the Pickled Herring in Cream Sauce, where the sweet and sour delicate herring, paired with crunchy onions, creates a wonderfully balanced starter that awakens the palate.

For soup lovers, their offerings are exceptional and comforting. The Mushroom Barley Soup is richly textured, earthy, and deeply satisfying, while the classic Chicken Noodle—served home-style with vegetables—is a warm hug on a chilly day. Add-ons like Kreplach or Matzo Balls can elevate your soup experience even further.

The handcrafted burgers deserve special mention, showcasing a delightful range from the indulgent Bacon Cheeseburger to the uniquely flavor-packed Pastrami Burger, which layers succulent pastrami atop a perfectly cooked patty. For those who prefer poultry, the Hot Open Fresh Roasted Turkey offers a tender and juicy option with all the comforting flavors you crave.

Dining at The Pickled Herring is more than just a meal—it’s a celebration of tradition, quality, and community. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, reflecting the genuine hospitality customers rave about. As Zachary Mindel shared, the staff goes above and beyond, ensuring every guest feels special and cared for, which made their engagement party unforgettable.

Patrons also praise the attentive service and the consistent quality of the food. Cliff Neubart’s experience with their waitress Mindy highlights the genuinely welcoming environment, complementing the “awesome” food. Meanwhile, Amanda Me’s journey to bring home the meals, including her favorite pickle and knish, underscores the irresistible allure and satisfaction The Pickled Herring instills in its guests—even from far away.

Every dish is crafted with care and packed with authentic flavors that resonate deeply, whether it’s the crispy, non-oily fries accompanying Jean Yoon’s favorite Reuben, or the hot pastrami smothered in savory goodness as Michael Aaron describes. Each visit promises abundant portions, vibrant tastes, and that unmistakable feeling of comfort from a well-loved kosher deli.

For those seeking a place where tradition meets excellence in every bite, The Pickled Herring invites you to experience its carefully curated menu that honors heritage while celebrating warmth and hospitality. It’s not just a restaurant—it’s a heartfelt destination for genuine, soulful food.

I had a great dinner. Matza ball soup. Chips (best with their gravy) and a hot pastrami. Hands down #1 pick for kosher deli.

Delish! Worth the 40 minute round-trip to bring home. Still warm. Overstuffed CB and a knish. My favorite pickle too!

A great place to have good food with friends and family. Pickled herring in cream with onion: good, the herring morsels are sweet and sour. Onions are crunchy and sweet. One slice of atuffed derma with Kishka: good, make sure you have it with the gravy served together. The Reuben: great! Supersized serving. Would eat again. The fries were good, crispy and not oily. Hot beef brisket with brown gravy: good, get a bit messy with gravy. Overstuffed combo sandwich - pastrami & corned beef: good, the sandwich was literally bursting.

Great food and generous portions. The place resembles a small diner with a display of all the deli delights behind a glass shield where servers take your carryout order. I would classify it as an authentic deli with the full array of offerings. Came at 1230 pm on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and seating was limited at that time. By time our party of 3 left, there was ample seating.

We live in a "Deli Dessert" AKA the Princeton area. You cannot get a good Pastrami or Corned Beef sandwich anywhere in the area. We grew up in the the New York City area, and so we were raised on good Deli food. So, we drove about an hour for lunch because we had heard such great things about The Pickled Herring. AND it did not disappoint. The Mushroom Barley soup was thick and delicious, just like I remember it from the great Jewish Delis. My Pastrami Sandwich was lean but also moist and delicious (see photo). The coleslaw and kosher pickles were a tasty complement to the sandwich. The side of Onion Rings was great (photo). Our server, Debbie, was both good at her job and very funny. She made our lunch experience just that much better. On the way out, we couldn't resist stopping for some take-out sandwiches and sides for later, and, of course, a big black n' white cookie for dessert. Bottom Line --- we will be back!

Had an absolutely wonderful experience at The Pickled Herring Deli in Englishtown today! The atmosphere was friendly, and the service was quick and attentive. I ordered the classic pastrami on rye and a cup of their famous matzo ball soup, and both were perfect—exactly what a great deli should be. The portions were generous, and everything tasted fresh and authentic. If you're looking for delicious, old-school Jewish comfort food in New Jersey, this is the spot! Highly recommend stopping by for a meal. ???????????????????????? #ThePickledHerringDeli #EnglishtownNJ #NJdeli #PastramiOnRye #MatzoBallSoup
